Generally speaking, a license is the set of conditions a creator establishes so that their work can be used.

Contrary to popular belief, if a work has no license, that does not imply that you can use that material without any restrictions. Just the opposite, it means that all rights are reserved and it cannot be reproduced, distributed, transformed or published without the permission of the licensor.

Therefore, when taking materials from the Internet in order to use them in the classroom, educators must check their license and comply with copyright laws.

Nowadays, some of the most popular licenses around the world are Creative Commons ones – a series of free licenses by which creators are given credit for their work and decide the rights they want to reserve. In other words: creators can allow licensees to use their work – or part of it – as long as some conditions are met:

Consequently, it is crucial that educators know this type of licenses and learn what they allow users to do and the conditions that must be met in order to create educational materials that observe copyright laws.

En términos generales, una licencia es el conjunto de condiciones bajo las cuales un autor decide que su obra sea usada.

En contra de la creencia popular, si en una obra no aparece ninguna indicación acerca de su licencia de uso, no es un material que podamos usar libremente. Muy al contrario, se entiende que dicha obra tiene todos los derechos reservados y no puede ser reproducida, distribuida, transformada ni publicada sin el permiso expreso del autor.

Por consiguiente, cuando queramos emplear un material de la red para incorporarlo a nuestras clases, se debe mirar el tipo de licencia con el que cuenta y respetar los derechos de autor.

En la actualidad, las licencias más usadas a nivel internacional son las Creative Commons – una serie de licencias gratuitas gracias a las cuales los autores reciben crédito por su obra y deciden qué derechos ceden y cuáles mantienen –. En otras palabras: el autor permite el uso total o parcial de su obra siempre y cuando se cumplan una serie de condiciones:

Por tanto, es importante que los docentes conozcan este tipo de licencias y sepan lo que cada una de ellas permite hacer y bajo qué condiciones – para así poder elaborar recursos educativos que incorporen materiales ajenos respetando los derechos de autor –.
