Serious Games are those whose main purpose is to promote learning, not just entertainment.

One useful tool both educators and students can use to create serious games is RPG Playground, a free Role Playing Game maker that allows the user to easily design educational video games –since no programming or artistic skills are required in order to command it–.

It was developed by Koen Witters, and in order to start using it you just need to visit https://rpgplayground.com/, click on the ‘MAKE’ tab and then register or log in. A series of menus will be displayed, allowing the user to build different indoor and outdoor settings –as well as a number of characters– just by dragging and dropping the desired items.

The characters include humanoids, elves and monsters, but there are also some animals, objects, vegetation, tiles, fences, and other elements to choose from.

It also enables users to add different levels to the game and change the appearance of the characters –as well as their health and death parameters, walk and swing weapon abilities, and orientation –.

The educator and/or student can also insert music and sounds, as well as the desired text to make the characters talk and interact with each other. Besides, you can add some commands to make the supporting characters carry out certain actions –like walking towards a specific place, undergoing a transformation, becoming active or inactive, offering the player a series of choices, and so on–.

Once created, if desired, the games can be shared so that anyone can play them.

RPG Playground (Role Playing Games)

Una herramienta útil que tanto docentes como estudiantes pueden emplear para crear juegos serios es RPG Playground, un creador gratuito de juegos de rol que permite a los usuarios diseñar fácilmente videojuegos educativos–.ya que no es necesario tener conocimientos de programación o artísticos para poder utilizarlo–.

Fue desarrollado por Koen Witters, y para poder empezar a utilizarlo basta con visitar la Web https://rpgplayground.com/, pinchar sobre la pestaña ‘MAKE’ y después registrarse o bien iniciar sesión. Se mostrarán entonces una serie de menús que permiten al usuario crear diferentes escenarios de interior y exterior –así como algunos personajes– simplemente mediante el procedimiento de arrastrar y soltar los elementos deseados.

Los personajes incluyen humanoides, elfos y monstruos, aunque también están disponibles algunos animales, objetos, vegetación, losetas y elementos de vallado, entre otros.

También permite a los usuarios ir añadiendo diferentes niveles al juego y cambiar la apariencia de los personajes –al igual que los parámetros de vida y muerte, las habilidades para caminar y manejar armas, y la orientación de los personajes–.

De igual forma, el docente y/o el estudiante pueden insertar música y sonidos, así como el texto que deseen para hacer que los personajes dialoguen e interactúen entre sí. Además, se pueden añadir comandos para que los personajes secundarios realicen determinadas acciones –tales como caminar hacia un lugar determinado, sufrir una transformación, activarse o desactivarse, ofrecer al jugador una serie de opciones, etc.–.

Una vez creados, si así se desea, los juegos pueden ser compartidos para que cualquier persona pueda disfrutarlos.
